CALVARY CAR SHOW

Calvary United Church in St. Jacobs held its second annual car show on Saturday, August 9. The event was staged to raise money for a mission trip, in November, to build homes in Mexico. About 60 people turned out for the event and raised $650 for building materials. A rainy day made for a smaller event than last year's show when about 50 vehicles were on display. This year nine cars, a truck and three tractors turned up for the show. (Photos by Dorothy McMillan)

STRAWBERRY SOCIAL FUNDRAISER

Leigha Romahn, 15, and Olivia Dale, 10, sample a heaping bowl of fresh strawberries at a Strawberry Social Fundraiser held Tuesday, June 24 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Philipsburg. Sheryl Stone, the church’s pastor, said money raised at the event was donated to two local children — Pauly Goncalves and Rachel Fox. Goncalves, of Kitchener, suffers from hydrocephalus and, until recently, had to travel with his truck-driving father so he could care for the boy while on the road. Rachel Fox, the daughter of Melodee and Kevin Fox of Waterloo, requires extensive physiotherapy in her recovery from encephalitis earlier this year. To donate for Pauly, visit the Royal Bank at branch No. 02512 and account No. 5102405. Donate funds for Rachel at any TD Canada bank, branch No. 2452, account No. 6300201.

A QUILT WITH A HISTORY

Zion United Church in Kitchener has a new — make that an old — hanging for one of its walls. This crazy quilt was created in 1910 by the women of Zion Evangelical Church, as Zion United was called at the time. It was presented as a parting gift to their pastor Rev. M.L.Wing. The quilt, which includes the signatures of parishioners, was passed down to Wing’s daughter Ruth Wing Brubaker who passed it down to her son David. David and his wife Margaret donated the quilt to Zion United at a service on May 25. (Photos by Olivia Tisdale)

Volunteer teams from River City Church in Cambridge soaped down about 60 vehicles at the Cambridge Centre mall, on Hespeler Road, on Saturday, May 31. About 20 people washed cars and handed out free coffee, doughnuts and car air fresheners. Darrell Bierman, River City's lead pastor.
