OTTAWA — Stephen Harper is taking his political battle to the airwaves in an effort to turn the public tide against the opposition coalition.

The prime minister is to address the country tonight at 7 p.m. ET in the face of opposition plans to bring down his minority Conservative government Monday.

Harper is expected to follow up the speech with a visit to Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean on Thursday morning to ask her to suspend Parliament until late January.

The Liberal-NDP coalition — backed by the Bloc Quebecois — has asked for equal TV time to respond.
