Andrew McPherson is a Guelph musician, songwriter and composer. He is currently reading: Sound Against Flame: The Process of Yoga and Atheism in America by Derek Beres (Outside the Box Publishing, 260 pages, $15 US)

"I chose this book firstly as I'm a huge supporter of Derek's work in music, yoga, literature and dj culture. He represents a kind of contemporary everyman to me.

"The notion of marrying two seemingly unrelated topics of discussion seemed very compelling and indeed, in my reading, that initial instinct has been borne out. I am very struck by the seeming opposites that are presented here where yoga, something many of us practitioners consider to be a sacred and spiritual practice, is partnered with something so diametrically opposed. ie. atheism.

"Derek's argument plunges very deeply into our notions of what is sacred, profane and in this case, "non" -- religious, as it were . . . Given the weighty nature of his discussion, I still feel as though I'm processing its questions and findings, but I do know that it is stirring the pot in a tangible and productive way."

On Saturday, Nov. 8, Andrew McPherson and Deliveryboy from the band Eccodek will perform their own music to accompany the 1927 silent film Metropolis at Dublin Street United Church in Guelph. The 9 p.m. event is part of the Guelph Festival of Moving Media.
